ultimedia.com

Hi, I am a member of Digiteka's team.

We are a French company providing many websites across the world with video players. These content videos are often monetized with a preroll video.

On September 28, a user reported one of our players on viewtopic.php?f=62&t=43630&hilit=ultimedia.com

On September 29 , our widgets started being blocked for Adblock users.

Could you please remove that line from the list so that our players can still be called and display content videos at the very least ?

Code: Select all

||ultimedia.com/api/widget/$xmlhttprequest
Many thanks in advance.

Damien.

Was added from this commit; https://github.com/easylist/easylist/co ... 6ac56fda05

Seems to be a valid addition?

Hi, this is not a valid addition as it blocks our whole widget, so it also blocks the content videos that our partner websites were willing to add to their pages to illustrate their articles, not just the preroll ad videos we play before the content videos.

Ad videos were already blocked in our players so there was no need to block the whole widget and its featured videos.

Could you please fix this ? This has a big impact on our partners' number of video streams for instance.

Many thanks.

@Digiteka Team

on tomshardware site, that specific page => your video is simply an annoying video ad not related to the article about How to update AMD Chipset driver

maybe you could ask your partners do not using your widget for advertising goals

Our algorithms are not always able to display 100% relevant videos but in that case we are still displaying hardware related content videos and not simply ads, this is why we think this report is abusive.
We totally understand the goal of adblocking plugins but in that case it is also blocking content and editorial videos on several websites across the world.

Hi, thanks for the update.

Is it possible to get our widget fully unblocked ? As of now I still cannot see our widget with the ABP plugin installed.
This is a big problem for some of our partner websites, for instance this french website has built a whole page dedicated to video and no player can be seen with ABP installed : https://www.ouest-france.fr/videos/

In the end, we are no different from Youtube, Dailymotion or Brightcove for instance, we're just a content video player with preroll video ads, we should not suffer from a whole player blocking.

Many thanks.

for other adblockers still up to easylist authors, fixed instead for uBo

Its very different from youtube.com, not sure how you're getting this comparison. Youtube or Dailymotion is its own dedicated social site, no native-advertising widget needed (people just embed videos directly, or link to them).

One man "partner widget" is another man's native advertising. This is native advertising.

Would reconsider @intense

@fanboy

Here: https://www.ouest-france.fr/videos is a completely broken page, maybe we should block only the clearly advertising widgets

Can't really selectively block some items. But I can see a need for it on ouest-france. But on Tomshardware? no. and probably other sites.

Hi,

Here are some more examples of websites where using Adblock plugins ends up with a broken video block :

Code: Select all

https://www.letelegramme.fr/monde/barcelone-scenes-de-guerilla-urbaine-apres-la-condamnation-des-independantistes-16-10-2019-12409975.php
The "Actualité vidéo" block remains empty

https://www.ouest-france.fr/
The "En vidéos" block remains empty

https://www.lesoir.be/
The "Vidéos" block remains empty

Code: Select all

https://www.boursorama.com/bourse/actualites/le-futur-patron-de-renault-ne-sera-pas-forcement-francais-selon-pannier-runacher-9cca203700b384e2aa7185b2dfd96bdc
The "Contenus vidéo recommandés" block remains empty

And this is without counting the vast majority of cases where the video blocks simply disappear without leaving a trace.

Some websites have seen their stream numbers decreased by 30% and video journalists are getting worried about this.

We would really appreciate if you could look into this and simply unblock our video widgets so that content videos can still be played on our partners' websites.

Many thanks.

I can help with an advice

- split between ads, tracking and contents.
- don't circumvent adblockers to force pre roll ads.

Ads and tracking were already being blocked on our players prior to that modification, so I guess that the split was already made and didn't require any additional type of blocking.

Regarding your second "advice", I guess that you're refering to that topic in which we eventually made a commitment not to try to circumvent adblockers, and we haven't doing so since then : viewtopic.php?p=134931#p134931

Could you please unblock our widgets so that our clients can at least get a working player to broadcast their contents ?

Many thanks.

What is the issue? its blocked for pretty obvious reasons

@fanboy the issue is that you're blocking the whole video widget, including the content videos from our publishers and not just the preroll ad.

Prior to this, Adblock was just blocking the preroll ads, which is what it is supposed to do, it should not affect the editorial content of the page.

Ad blocking is fine, content blocking is not.
