dailycaller.com ads via websockets

Post by inspector »

I've been seeing ads on dailycaller.com for some time now, and began wondering why they never get zapped. I tracked them down, and realized they are not loaded by a regular javascript, they are loaded over websockets. Here is the ws URL responsible for loading these ads:

Code: Select all

ws://ws-gateway.com/
With these request headers:

Code: Select all

Accept-Encoding:gzip, deflate, sdch
Accept-Language:en-US,en;q=0.8,sv;q=0.6,de;q=0.4,es;q=0.2
Cache-Control:no-cache
Connection:Upgrade
Host:ws-gateway.com
Origin:http://dailycaller.com
Pragma:no-cache
Sec-WebSocket-Extensions:permessage-deflate; client_max_window_bits
Sec-WebSocket-Key:LS+/r5d71cvYT0nTqXcT6A==
Sec-WebSocket-Version:13
Upgrade:websocket
User-Agent:Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_4) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/50.0.2661.86 Safari/537.36
Then I found out that the Adblocker plugin I'm using doesn't actually support blocking websocket connections in Chrome (Adblock+). I haven't tried it, but its supposed to be possible to block websocket connections in Firefox.
uBlock Origin has created a workaround which allows that plugin to block websocket connections in Chrome anyway, and this brings me to suggest the following block be added to easylist:

Code: Select all

||ws-gateway.com^$script
This gets rid of these ads at least for those using uBlock, and presumably in Firefox with regular Adblockers as well! Hopefully the problem will be fixed in Chrome soon, for all the Chrome / AdBlock+ users out there!

Apart from being a chrome/webkit limitation, there is little we can do atm.

for dailycaller on chrome, even without ubo, add these filters:

Code: Select all

@@||dailycaller.com^$generichide
||outbrain.com^$domain=dailycaller.com
dailycaller.com##.OUTBRAIN

The workaround fix for websocket can be implemented by any blocker. For example, AdGuard is implementing it -- and AdGuard devs contributed to improve the workaround fix[1]. Ideally all blockers would support it (the Chromium issue has been lingering for years, there is no reason to believe it will be fixed in the short term).

I've recently seen several sites (no, not all. I'm fairly certain this is not the result of adware on my linux box) that have very persistant ads that I'm unable to get adblock to correctly block.

An example is: http://dailycaller.com/2016/07/05/new-study-shows-natural-causes-for-antarctic-sea-ice-growth/

The offending portions on this site are labeled

Sponsored by AdReclaim

but I'm not sure if that's been true of all of the sites I've seen with this behavior of late.

||outbrain.com^$domain=dailycaller.com
dailycaller.com##.OUTBRAIN
This blocked most of it. I then added the 3 lines from your post above and that got the rest.

Thank you!

The filters above are working fine in chrome too (tested with ABP)
Disable all other blocking extensions, keep only 1 adblocker (disable ghostery, disconnect, other)

Hi! I'm seeing these Trending Now ads on

Code: Select all

http://dailycaller.com/2016/08/08/cnn-will-trump-follow-drudges-lead-and-question-hillarys-health-video/
, in AdBlock 3.1, all lists updated today, Chrome current version, after trying all of the filters suggested above. Is there some combination of them that I'm getting wrong?

if you are using AB it's due to websocket crap. ABP (last dev build) added websocket support.
