Pornhub NETWORK pop-up redirects

Post by dr_boo »

This issue have also been reported in https://issues.adblockplus.org/ticket/2095#comment:16.

Inline scripting
The pop-up redirect described in next section is executed by one of the inline JavaScripts. uBlock can be used to disable all inline scripts (<script type="text/javascript">) for a given domain, however, this will block other inline JavaScripts required by the Pornhub NETWORK to be used to show videos. In other words, this has been set up intentionally by MindGeek to enforce it's users to experience ads if they want to watch videos. The Alexa pages for ebocornac.com, e-n-t-e-r-n-e-x.com, and doublepimp.com, lists Pornhub NETWORK sites under "Upstream Sites" which gives the idea that these domain is dedicated to online advertisement for MindGeek.

Pop-up redirects
This is about pop-up redirects, also known as pop unders, or background redirects. RequestPolicy (but not RequestPolicy Continued) successfully blocks windows/tabs that redirect to popups.

"ebocornac.com is the JavaScript-based popup opened in MinGeek's Pornhub NETWORK sites that is used to perform URL redirection to ads via doublepimp.com. Affiliates includes casino.com, 888casino.com, and more. The Alexa page ebocornac.com lists Pornhub NETWORK sites under "Upstream Sites" which gives the idea that this domain is dedicated to online advertisement. These pop-ups are sophisticated as neither Adblock Plus or uBlock can block these pop-ups." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MindGeek# ... vertisment ||ebocornac.com^$popup,third-party is currently in EasyList but it didn't block the pop-ups. Neither did ||ebocornac.com^ and ||doublepimp.com^. doublepimp redirect to the ad URLs like: Further reading

Yes, I am also concerned about the amount of JavaScript on these sites - relating to ads and specifically working around ad blockers. Can anything be done about this forced advertising?

uMatrix can be used to block these popups!

uMatrix (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/umatrix/) is developed by Ramond Hill who also put together uBlock and now works on uBlock Origin. However, neither uBlock or uBlock Origin can block these popups which make uMatrix unique.

Oh, sorry. uBlock Origin also blocks it.

There is no code in uMatrix to block such redirect. There is code though to block completely a page -- just like strict blocking in uBlock Origin. So mainly what happens with uMatrix/uBlock Origin is that `ebocornac.com` is completely blocked, foiling the ensuing chain of redirects. However one will still have to go through the inconvenience of having to close the pop-under tab. By the way, what causes uMatrix/uBlock to completely block `ebocornac.com` is the use of Peter Lowe's blacklist, so you should get the same behavior with uBlock Origin that you get with uMatrix -- unless you un-selected Peter Lowe's.

Adblock Plus, uBlock₀, AdBlock or any other adblocker can do this if you subscript to the correct filters list.

  • Firefox blockers that strictly block `ebocornac.com` by default
  • uBlock Origin 1.1.1
  • uMatrix 0.9.2.1
  • Firefox blockers that do not strictly block `ebocornac.com` by default
  • AdBlock 2.4
  • Adblock Plus 2.6.11
  • uBlock 0.9.1.0.1-signed - (even if the same filters are used as in uBlock Origin)

  • Firefox blockers that do not strictly block `ebocornac.com` by default
  • uBlock 0.9.5.0 - (Peter Lowe’s Ad server list‎ do not block this as this filter do in uBlock Origin)
Also, the filters was of course updated in all blockers before these tests was performed.
