Does anyone know of, or have access to, a non-labor intensive way to evaluate each of the below approx 350 purported trackers for ABP Tracking Filter inclusion suitability? If so, please let me know.

Each is alive in the sense that a server responded on its behalf when visited/queried within the last 30 days. And none are presently caught by either ABP Tracking Filter or EasyList, it seems to me.

Many of those are actually caught. I would say probably more than half.

Almost all subdomains containing variations of track track tracking stat stats count counter counters click would probably be eliminated right of the bat (although I noticed that "adlog" is contained in the EasyList ... I'll have to move that over)

Also, there are generics of directories and filenames that would take care of more of those if the exact directory structures were known. Add to those, the strings that contain simple things like "&referer=$image" and some "s-code" structures ... and many of the 'real world' addresses for other trackers are not needed as many are already blocked.


Trackers need to be found on an individual basis as not to duplicate (or triplicate) the filtering. I also always like to see a block personally as to know why it was blocked in the first place. The way that I write a filter actually helps me remember writing it in the first place.

Does anyone know of, or have access to, a non-labor intensive way to rank either relative traffic volume or relative risk to privacy for each of the 'domains' listed in the initial post of this thread?

If so, please let me know as I would like to conduct some further research on the 100 or so which are the largest remaining potential 'risks.' The adblockplus.org redundancy check tool finds none of the above domains rendered redundant by EasyList or by ABP Tracking Filter presently--which is one of the reasons I am particularly curious about what related to this grouping might actually bypass ABP subscriptions. Perhaps some things will warrant adding some filters.

I just matched your list of 347 domains to some filter list combinations, with the following results:

tracking filters alone = 61 blocked
tracking + EasyList = 64 blocked
tracking + C?drics Liste (mine) = 122 blocked

So while there are some misses, some however should absolutely not be blocked, e.g. http://www.live365.com

Most of the time, domains like that need to be seen in context of their actual usage, so unfortunately, huge
compiled lists of "evil domains" are of limited use to filter list authors.

There are however some strings I'd indeed recommend adding to the tracking list:
.cjt1.net (I know this one, it has been in my list for years)
http://statistics.
.esomniture.com (omniture apparently have added "es" to their domain name. To evade filtering?)

For giggles, I do some investigation of possible evil domains and post links to their in-context usage when I believe I actually have found one/them bypassing a relevant filter group. The narrower the list of possible evil domains can be made, the more efficient the investigation.

So naturally, I’m interested in learning how you did the matching. And if it is not something I can easily do myself in an automated way, would you please let me know what items were blocked by which filter?

I used ABP itself and a little bit of cheating

You need access to a webserver though (an Apache on localhost will do).

Create a HTML file with <img> tags, one for each string you want to test. Now fill in the "src" attribute with http://<string_to_test>, e.g.:

Those strings can be completely arbitrary, they don't need to be domain names, just prefix them all with http://. No need for a doctype declaration nor any other kind of way to make it valid HTML either. Now you load this file through your webserver (just opening it via file:/// won't do it), and voila - ABP tells you what would be blocked with the lists and rules that are currently active, and counts the matches for you. Unfortunately, there is no way to export those matches, so you'll have to go through them by hand.

Using PageRank to cut the list of 347 trackers down to those with popularity rankings of 10% or greater yields the following 57. If you locate a website using for tracking purposes any of these 57, or their relations not already filtered, please furnish the address; esomniture.com and cjt1.net are also of particular interest.

Secondarily, I'd be interested in hearing about any not already filtered use of the other 290, as well. With respect to estimated relative potential impact, if you have a way that is better than PageRank to trim a list like that of the 347, I’d be interested in that as well.

Also, remember these are lists of possibly 'evil' domains, obviously. The internet is subject to change. Some websites may be insecure. I do not know what risks, if any, there may be in visiting any of these domains, or any webpages, and of course I cannot and do not guarantee, warrant or represent they are safe to visit. The server/something won't let the third item below be submitted as an http link in this post, is such link extra evil? . . .I have no idea.
