Reddit is stress-testing Adblock Plus server

Post by Wladimir Palant Verified »

My two years old blog post made the front page on reddit: http://adblockplus.org/blog/anatomy-of-ads
Right now it is number 7 on reddit and apparently stayed somewhere around that position for the last 14 hours. The blog post had 24 comments in 10 hours (when I checked my mail this morning I thought I am being spammed) and the current visitor rate is several times the usual number. Consequently, the load levels are around 0.20 which is a relatively high level but there is still plenty of room and the response time doesn't seem to be higher than usually (according to the monitoring service the response is occasionally delayed by up to 100ms compared to the usual numbers, this seems to come entirely from the database which needs to process more requests than usually). So big thanks to reddit for allowing me to check the resource reserves of my server, apparently those are plenty :)

Looks like you also have this:

... which was the first story posted on Foxiewire.

Looks like you are popular today, Wladimir :D

Despite my utmost respect for Foxiewire, it doesn't generate 5000 clicks per hour ;)

I agree ... but every little bit helps.

Oh, I don't say it doesn't help - the attention coming from fligtar's blog post is certainly worth a lot more than reddit users who will be gone the minute the link disappears from the front page. But fligtar won't help me stress-test the server.

On an unrelated note, Macworld named Adblock Plus as one of the best add-ons for Safari and Firefox.

Have a link? I wonder what exactly "for Safari" means.

Btw, everything is back to normal again. "Anatomy of ads" blog post has been viewed more than 60000 times. The effect on Adblock Plus downloads: zero.

Don't have a link, but I saw it in the March 2009 issue of Macworld. Here's a list of the add-ons:
  • 1Password
    Adblock Plus
    Cooliris
    CosmoPod
    CustomizeGoogle
    DeliciousSafari
    Download Statusbar
    Fast Dial
    Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer
    GooglePreview
    Inquisitor
    PithHelmet
    Quartz PDF Plugin
    Read It Later
    SafariDockStatus
    SafariStand
    Stumbi
    StumbleUpon
    Surf Canyon
    Tab Mix Plus
    Web Snapper
What, me worry?

Yes, that's pretty common. c't 4/2009 for example has some "essential" applications on a DVD - including Firefox and five add-ons (GreaseMonkey, Flashblock, Adblock Plus, Firebug, DOM Inspector).
