Google Images has removed View Image button

Post by gotitbro »

Google recently removed the "View Image" button from Google Images. So when you open an image on Google Images you won't be able to view it in its full size and to do that you will have to visit the website with their ads tracking etc. and find it on the page itself.

As can be seen it is a whole lot inconvenient and you have to visit websites unnecessarily. The "search by image" button has also been removed.

This comes after Getty sued Google alleging it allowed people to steal its images. Google removed the "view image" and "search by image" buttons and is displaying copyright info more prominently to settle the case.

Oh well, I guess its time to use Bing now.

PS: You can still right click to open image in a new tab in your browsers. But people have said that in some cases even if you do this it only loads Google's cache of the image not the full size image from the website itself.

Also, Google now loads the image directly from the website when you search instead of its own cache. So your info (IP, referrer etc.) are sent to the website without you even visiting it.

These changes don't seem so good to me.

Code: Select all

Yep, that's how I always did it. Don't understand why are people making a big deal out of this. It was a convenience, not the be all/end all for viewing images.

That might be because earlier if you clicked "open image in a new tab" on an image (https://i.imgur.com/49BQmjU.jpg) it would load the cached version from Google. And to view the original image file you had to use the "view image" button.

What happens now is that the image is directly loaded/hotlinked from the website in question (https://i.imgur.com/V7XRgtM.png). So the right click option works more efficiently.

This is problematic for two reasons. Firstly you are visiting the website by just viewing the image on Google without ever leaving it. Secondly the view image button was way more convenient and would load original file no matter what. While now in some cases even if you right click open in new tab the cached version will load (the right click option also doesn't work on high res images https://www.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/7xvdkk/google_removed_the_view_image_button_on_google/dubyfaa/?context=1).

Firstly you are visiting the website by just viewing the image on Google without ever leaving it.
So ? What's the issue with that ? If you're worried about referrer leakage, don't be. It's been happening since the beginning. Everytime you click on a hyperlink, you give away your ref. Installing an extension can take care of that.
Secondly the view image button was way more convenient
Convenient by one click. That's all it was. Now you have to click twice to open the same image i.e. right click and then do ''open image in a new tab". If you were a regular user of View Image, then you will face some discomfort for some time until you get used to doing it via right click.
would load original file no matter what
Images loading from Google's CDN are also original, only difference being they load from Google's server, so they load fast, but they're still the original.
the right click option also doesn't work on high res images
That's the only issue with the whole scenario. But I'm not concerned. Google will do something about that soon enough. I feel the core reason people are raging because Google bowed to Getty and removed the button and people hate the fact that Google surrendered so easily and gave up.

An extension has been created for Chrome and FF that brings back the functionality - https://github.com/bijij/ViewImage
