Oh dear, this is something.
When using an adblocker (uBlock in my case) the site doesn't allow you to set an avatar (which prevents one from uploading, you need an avatar for that, it's supposed to be an anti-spam measure).
I can link a random picture:

But back then they didn't require anything.

I had hoped to find a ready-made fix here, but I figured out something that worked for me. It seems to be due to the blocking of some scripts from googleapis that you need to allow.
