Suggestions for tracking filter [n/a]

Post by Calimo »

Spybot - Search & Destroy found several tracking cookies in my Firefox profile, in spite of the Tracking Filter. I added the following lines in my personal list :

Code: Select all

advertising.com
atdmt.com
cj.com
commission-junction.com
doubleclick.com
doubleclick.net
fastclick.net
mediaplex.com
apmebf.com
statcounter.com
tradedoubler.com
zedo.com
Hope that it will work (note : not sure they are all trackers and not counters (statcounter.com), but some are definitely (commission-junction.com, doubleclick.net|com, ...)).

Lots of these domains are already in the lists. :wink:

Code: Select all

advertising.com -> Already in EasyList (".adverti")
atdmt.com -> Already in EasyList ("atdmt.com/")
doubleclick.com -> Already in EasyList (".doubleclick.")
doubleclick.net -> Already in EasyList (".doubleclick.")
fastclick.net -> Already in EasyList (".fastclick.")
mediaplex.com -> Already in EasyList (".mediaplex.")
statcounter.com -> Already in ABP Tracking Filter (".statcounter.")
tradedoubler.com -> Already in EasyList (".tradedoubler.")
zedo.com -> Already in EasyList (".zedo.com/")
So there is only

Code: Select all

cj.com
commission-junction.com
apmebf.com
left.

That's strange, because Spybot keeps finding them...

In fact, it looks like it doesn't remove the cookies (I re-analyzed just after removing them, and it still find them...). So probably they were here before I installed the list :oops:

I removed them manually, I'll see 8)
Thanks !

I suspect the theme of Calimo's initial observation is correct.

Of the 9 filters that Ares provides--
"advertising.com -> Already in EasyList (".adverti") . . ."

Each requires usage of either an additional lower-level domain name, a higher-level domain name, a path or some combination thereof; otherwise such filters would be bypassed.

The use of certain specific second-level domains for third-party tracking service purposes as well as the tendency of certain specific second-level domain names to be included in paths used for first-party tracking purposes deserves additional scrutiny probably; while keeping the potential of adding false positives in mind of course.

Thanks to Calimo and Ares for calling more attention to this matter.

@ Calimo

You may pick up a cookie from some of those if you visit a whitelisted site. If you do pick up a cookie, the chances are that they are hardy ever accessed because the domain is ALMOST always blocked.

Don't forget that anytime that you disable ABP for any reason you will receive any cookies that are available where you are too. It only takes 1 visit somewhere to create a cookie. I wouldn't worry about it too much because they wouldn't normally be accessed anyway.

You can also add those domains to be 'blocked' in Firefox's cookie controls if they bother you.
