Is there a way to get around the countdown scripts that force you to remain on the page for the entire duration of the countdown, and stop counting if you change tabs or windows? 10 or 30 seconds is fine, but ones that make you wait for a whole minute are just plain evil.

I am not just asking for the site in my example though, but for all...I hope there is a single filter that'll work across sites.

You can use the user script AdsBypasser which can help you to:
- skip countdown ads or continue pages.
- prevent ad pop-up windows.

using uBo (ublock origin) you could try

filefox.cc##script:inject(nano-setInterval-booster.js)

...however, after the fast countdown the site (maybe server side checking) displays "skipped countdown"
