I notice text ads down the right-hand side when viewing the example page on my Android 5 tablet. However, the ads are hidden when viewing the same page on my desktop PC. So it looks like different code is being used for tablet and PC users, with the tablet code not being hidden and the PC code hidden. Both systems use Firefox/uBlock Origin (latest versions).

Example:

Code: Select all

When you scroll down an article and if the article contains a video a small video player keeps popping up on the bottom right of the webpage. What can be done to block this player?

This breaks all the videos on the website rather than just the popup player in the bottom right.

probably it's simpler:
- click autoplay on ==> will become OFF, refresh ==> the side player disappears (probably it's controlled by some cookie)

Well, that doesn't work either.

A large black box appears titled "What do you need to know about free software?" in the bottom-right corner of the screen when scrolling down the page. It has no visible close option and overlays other content on the page.

It does block the black square in the bottom-right corner when scrolling down. However, it prevents the "read more +" links from working. Also, (to a lesser extent though) the top part of the screen goes black when scrolling down.

1) The video titled "What do you need to know about free software?" now plays automatically and simply hiding the player with download.cnet.com###uvp-video doesn't work, we need to block video source as well: ||pmd.download.net.edgesuite.net

2) On the software page there are also offers below the video player, these can be hidden by:
download.cnet.com##.product-single-offer-container
SS: https://i.imgur.com/V20jv83.png (Screenshot of the offer taken without any custom filters)

Note: The above 2 points were tested on this http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html page.

3) On the main page http://download.cnet.com/ there is blank ad space below the header, this can be hidden by:
download.cnet.com###download-fd-leaderboard-ad-top

On the page on which the software file downloads, there is a blank ad space below the video player (this video player can be hidden by: download.cnet.com###video_player ;-) ), I am unable to hide this ad space as the value keeps changing on different download pages, any help will be appreciated.

Thanks that blocks ad space, we can refine it a bit more to:

Code: Select all

||download.cnet.com/module/cast/main/$subdocument

On all articles they have these html popups that autoplays a video.
Seriously annoying.

Code: Select all

https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-automatically-start-a-program-minimized-in-windows/
Ads: https://i.imgur.com/PrHu84y.png

Code: Select all

||cnet.com/component/load/xhr/*-deals-drawer&
cnet.com##.realtime-ticker
Annoyance: https://i.imgur.com/HwKB8Ym.png

Not sure how to block this. This blocks the specific video that plays (at least for me):

Code: Select all

cnet.com##.featuredVideo
||cnet-vh.akamaihd.net/i/mpx/2016/*/ht_RealBlackFridayDeals_$domain=cnet.com
And this blocks all videos on cnet:

Code: Select all

cnet.com##.featuredVideo
||cnet-vh.akamaihd.net/i/mpx/$xmlhttprequest,domain=cnet.com

Yes. The ads appear a brief while after the page loads and Chrome status bar shows a whole bunch of "Waiting for *.g00.cnet.com" connections.
