Pardon my stupidity ;)
Cant we rely to duckduckgo.com about tracking or better to say non-tracking? :(

Because it blocks user tracking.

This is happening on a result page of duckduckgo.com, and it is 1st party call and not 3rd party call.
I cant see how this is tracking?

Open duckduckgo.com, enter "video" for example for search. Every line of result has also an icon representing the target in front.
This icon is pulled also from duckduckgo.com as 1st party and not from 3rd party.

cheers

How is it not tracking? It collects information like which browser the user has. Read the link I provided. It explains why this filter should be in the list. https://easylist.to/2011/08/31/what-is- ... cking.html

OK, I see now what is the trouble here. Its not the image/icon itself, but it is that the duckduckgo.com reads my user agent?
I might wrongly understood that this particular site does not track or collect user info and if it reads, it does to improve user expirience.
Is it that we cant trust duckduckgo.com that it doesnt collect the data?
Sorry for my stupidity. I would like to help, but I, obviously, will need to learn to understand and to distinguish what is true positive and what is false positive first. ;)

At the same time, I would also like to express that I am very happy for your work for us and thank you.

Yes, but it's not a simple image/icon, it's a tracking pixel. It's obvious that it is since it's a 1x1 transparent image.
You can even see some of the information that's collected in the URL of some pixels:

Image

It's clear that information about my browser was collected since there's a parameter br=chrome which likely means "browser is Chrome" and I was using Google Chrome when making the search.
It doesn't matter if we can trust DDG or not. The point of EasyPrivacy is to give the user the ability to avoid being tracked.

Hi, this is Gabriel Weinberg, founder of DuckDuckGo. As you know, we are a search engine that doesn't track our users at all (https://duckduckgo.com/privacy). This path that is being blocked is one of the only ways we can anonymously improve our product, by understanding what is happening on our site, totally anonymously.

We of course do not use any third-party analytics, and because we do not collect or share personal information ourselves, none is associated with these requests, such as IP addresses or other persistent unique identifiers.

I also posted a similar comment on the GitHub thread without realizing this was the better place.

On a related note, blocking the t.js request posted at the bottom would degrade the speed of, and may in some cases, break our site completely.

I'd love to continue this discussion and see if we can find a way to unblock these requests within the bounds of your policies. If that involves changing the way we make these requests, we would be open to that. We believe deeply in no tracking.

If that is not possible, I understand and we will just have to deal with it. Nevertheless, I hope we can certainly not block things that degrade the site or worse break it.

which cases where would it break the site?

Anything ending in .js is involved in rendering results, by containing result data itself, rendering code, or some combination, and can therefore break the site. t.js is not related to /t/ in any way. The naming is coincidental.

I've been reading your policies and appreciate their thoughtfulness and thoroughness. I believe an underlying assumption in the first-party trackers is that the first-party site is using this information to track users, by affiliating it with user personal information in some way, either by being logged in or through some other form of persistent identification (e.g. IP address or unique cookie).

At DuckDuckGo, we do not track users, and so have no form of persistent user identification. For example, we have no IP addresses in our logs and we do not create unique cookies. In fact, we do not even have the capability to create search histories or search sessions by design. Therefore these /t/ calls are completely anonymous when they hit our site, and are simply anonymous aggregate counts. They inform us when, and in what situations, our site is broken, and more generally what is happening on our site in aggregate.

With this context, would it be possible to unblock these requests? If not, could you please offer particular guidance as to what we would need to do to get them unblocked? As I said above, we are open to suggestion.

I should also point out, since maybe it is a point of confusion here, that things like language and query embedded in various *.js requests are necessary for us to create our results exactly because we do not track our users. That is, we have a micro-services architecture where different components get different types of results (e.g. images, maps, etc.), and those are requested and built asynchronously by the client to render the page. Because we do not have any persistent unique identifiers like cookies or IP addresses, even within the same search request we need each sub-request to have all the information embedded in it needed to get the right results. For example, the image request also needs to know the query. Let me know if this requires more explanation.

I am speachless. Respect to the easylist team and to the Gabriel Weinberg itself, as a founder of duckduckgo, to get personally involved for resolution.

Thank you all for your commitment and great products.

Cheers

What's exactly the issue?

We have made no changes at DuckDuckGo. The URL above is part of our open source instant answer library that uses external Javascript APIs to help build instant answers on DuckDuckGo: https://github.com/duckduckgo/zeroclickinfo-spice. It has been around for many years. More broadly it is part of our DuckDuckHack system -- you can find extensive documentation and other information about it on https://duckduckhack.com/

As I explained in the other thread, and as explained in our privacy policy in great detail (https://duckduckgo.com/privacy), at DuckDuckGo we do not collect or share personal information at all. Therefore, none of our first-party requests involve tracking because they are all completely anonymous. I understand how this is unusual since most sites and companies track people. We do not.

Please do not disable the main way people install DuckDuckGo in their browser. That will severely limit our ability to grow and maintain our non-tracking search engine.

Once installed, that dialog does not show anymore. It is also dismissible, which is remembered. And as noted above, we provide another homepage domain where it doesn't exist. A message about that appears when you dismiss this dialog.
