Probably not the most efficient code, but I've been using this..which avoids many false positives with some of the the tomshardware videos (if i recall correctly)

Code: Select all

*.ad.tomshardware.com/cgi-bin/*

@Hubird
I think I've got things under control their now
It was a bit tricky. I also never saw the first 2 flash ads you mentioned, Hubird. I can't tell you what I changed, removed, or added ... but the video and 'tv' parts seem to be alright now and ads are gone. You'll have to check it out for me.

@fanboy:
I already had tried that "cgi" string ... and there were some problems with (I think) the 'tv' video. I can't recall exactly :|

Nag, nag, nag :(

The new changes you made seem to be working well.

http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/03/18/ ... x2_review/

Code: Select all

tomshardware.com#TABLE(id=merchant_link)
Seems to be the only sponsored link section to be seen.

Also the site make heavy use of pricegrabber.com in the sponsored links sections, would blocking them with something like

Code: Select all

http://*.pricegrabber.com/*
be applicable (You always tell people to disable ABP on shopping sites and it will save some loading on Toms hardware) ?

Images seem to come from http://ai.pricegrabber.com & http://li.pricegrabber.com

*** These seems to be new ***

Code: Select all

tomshardware.com#TABLE(id=pg160x600)
tomshardware.com#TABLE(id=pg336x280)
tomshardware.com#DIV(class=shoppingBox)
tomshardware.com#TABLE(id=pg728x90)
http://*.pricegrabber.com/*

As a web designer / manager I'm actually a little ticked off at the EasyList for adding pricegrabber to the list. In fact I've decided to tell all of my readers to add pricegrabber to the exceptions list if they use ABP and EasyList. As much as I also like to avoid these annoying ads and popups, Pricegrabber is used more like a tool than an advertisement on many of our topend sites. This certainly puts us into a debate of how, if any, we can provide an easy layout to display prices and locations for the hardware & software we are reviewing at the time. So as you can see this is a Love / Hate issue. Web providers need to get paid to keep these sites up and running because it's not free. On the otherhand a lot of advertising companies have gone over the top with Trojans and Spyware. It just sucks that something we are using as a tool is now being blocked, so I expect 25% of the browser market that uses Firefox, and whatever % of those that use ABP, and whatever % of those that use "Easylist" are now losing out to our provided information and what little profits we generate from a few clicks along the way..sigh

If I want to know the price of something I can very easily Google it or check out my preferred local store. I don't need or want pricegrabber ads trying to shove other loosely related products in my face.

I thought I was seeing a few too many ads on Toms Hardware so I deleted and resubscribed to the filter subscriptions and it has cleaned it up a fair bit. I don't know if my filters somehow got messed up or you added new rules but the only thing left on the link I provided

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/impact-agp,164.html

Is a price grabber shopping box.

Code: Select all

http://*.pricegrabber.com/*

Code: Select all

tomshardware.com#DIV(class=shoppingBox)
Take care of everything.

I'll second that. I had pricegrabber on my personal blocking list. Now I can remove it.

I'm sorry about that, Tivon. But when I get enough complaints for things that I had considered 'marginal' and normally wouldn't bother adding, I feel responsible to add them. The lists are driven by user requests/complaints ... and pricegrabber has been requested a lot lately.

In some ways, I'm sorry that ABP and the EasyList has become so popular ... if they weren't, then no one would really care.

Every few refreshes I get unblocked ads (which I mistakenly thought were blocked when I updated my subscriptions :( ) .

One up the very top next to the Toms Hardware logo which has images from price grabber in it (Even when the ad is not visible it container can be hidden with EHH)

Code: Select all

tomshardware.com#DIV(id=header-advert)
In between the price grabber box and "The Motherboards Articles" box an ad box sometimes appears

Code: Select all

tomshardware.com#DIV(id=advertRightWhite)
or is it better to block the iFrame ?

Code: Select all

tomshardware.com#IFRAME(src=http://www.ad.tomshardware.com/cgi-bin/bd.m?count=15421&time=SCxzj9hcf-MAADcbL2Y&location=banner2/tomshardware_reviews_components_motherboards_2000_02_14_the_impact_of_the_agp_speed/reviews/impact-agp,164.html&dns=au&fillin=0&topic=&image=http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/N5088.tomshardware.comOX3423/B2760491.9;sz%3D336x280;mtfIFPath%3D/us/doubleclick/;ord%3DSCxzj9hcf-MAADcbL2Y%3F)
On the right hand side under the "The Motherboards Articles" box a box sometimes appears which has images from price grabber in it

Code: Select all

tomshardware.com#TABLE(id=pg160x600)
Also a 1x1 image, probably used for tracking ?
1x1 Image

I'm glad that the general consensus is that price grabber should be blocked.

They are still visible on Toms Hardware and as mentioned earlier they can be blocked and hidden by:

Code: Select all

http://*.pricegrabber.com/*
And

Code: Select all

tomshardware.com#DIV(class=shoppingBox)

After some testing there I saw most of the random appearing ads Hubird mentioned (header-advert, advertRightWhite, pg**x**) if I just use the filter from the three Easys. Then I added the rule I already suggested here

Code: Select all

.ad.tomshardware.com/*.html?
to block all the initial adscripts salvy mentioned. I tested again, and none of the random ads appeared again (also tested with cleared cache/cookie and new IP). This rule also seems to work fine with the video section: The stuff from the adserver that is needed to play the video is not affected by the rule. The question is: Does this create a FP elsewhere?

The only ad left was the pricegrabber-box in the upper right corner.

Code: Select all

tomshardware.com#DIV(class=shoppingBox)

I actually just updated the filters for there (different from the suggestions here).I was also able to remove the video whitelist for there too. It was minimal work and I think it's pretty good. Check it.
