BikeChatForums.com Adverts

Post by Newbie »

Hi,

I've noted that on http://www.bikechatforums.com there are eBay listing adverts at the bottom of the majority of pages. On the whole they seem to relate to the content of the thread, so if nothing matches on eBay, no advert is shown.

Secondly, is there a way to block the image at the top of the page, which says "Blocking ads kills kittens.." etc. It seems to generate a random file name every time.

Thanks

Yes, as long as they don't change anything, this one should work:

Code: Select all

bikechatforums.com##.banner
I will not add that to EasyList however, as the message is not really that annoying and it's our practice to allow sites to ask users to disable adblockers as long as the message isn't distracting and site functionality isn't limited.

Hi,

Thank you.

I know the banner isn't really appropriate to be blocked by the list, but it's more for my own annoyance. I'd like to choose not to see it, and the over-zealous method employed to force me to view the banner is something that I personally find annoying.

Thank you once again.

Hi,

The adverts are back again. Is this a case where the owners will just adjust them as and when they blocked in future or is the ad-blocking side of it not working properly?

Thanks

Looks like they changed something, I will keep an eye on the site. Adjusted the rules: https://hg.adblockplus.org/easylist/rev/6eb3f7b6ab12

I'm sorry if this seems really picky, but one of the rules would appear to block all ebay links, even if someone mentions a link on eBay in a post. Is there a way to make it not do that, so I can at least copy and paste the link? I'd rather do that than risk occidentally earning the host money through their forceful adverts.

Hi,

Please bare in mind I know nothing about how this magic works, just trying to aid in improving adblocking, but (you know it's coming) if you see http://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=234659 Then you may notice there's adverts showing down the bottom of the page.

Baring I know nothing about how this works, is it not possible to just get rid of the whole box down the bottom, since it only ever contains adverts?

Thanks again

Hi,

I'm not sure what the latest update did, but it certainly cured many of the adverts. I think I found a 'variation' of the previous lot of adverts. This has 3 per row, previously had 4.

Apologies for throwing these spanners in here. :)

Hi,

Adverts have returned, again. Out of curiosity Is this due to change on the site or just a variation?

Could you please force a subscription update? They are still blocked for me.

Hi,

Done, I've put a screen shot below, just in case I'm being really silly. I'm fairly confident it's all updated though.

Just happened to have reviewed a thread within BikeChatForums.com which those adverts were mentioned, here: http://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=197590 Originally written 20th May 2010, edited just days after I asked on here about the adblocking. My current train of thought is that Korn (the admin of BikeChatForums) is working as hard as possible to avoid the adverts being blocked.

I'll briefly mention that whenever you post a link to eBay on that website (parts, bikes, whatever), the site somehow converts it from a regular link into a referral link. With this in mind is there some other way, such as removing all the rover.ebay etc links, but leave the text there? This way, regardless of the minor adjustments he makes, we won't have these unwanted pictures load up (I often pay for data) and no matter how he positions the adverts, the links won't go through?

I'll briefly mention again, I don't really understand how websites are built, not how adblocking works, so my ideas may come across, and are, very naive.

Thanks

Apologies, forgot to mention in my last post, the post on bikechatforums.com which I linked to used to say "BCF just gets a small chunk of commission from eBay for referred bids/buys. My adblock doesn't work on it, what gives? It's built into the site" or something to that effect, which has now been removed.

If I could work out how to view Google's cache of that page, it would help.

I lie, I found a different site's cache of it: http://web.archive.org/web/201007031422 ... p?t=197590

It's built into the site and not served by a third party (such as the Google ads) therefore your ad blocker won't block it. If you really want to get rid of it, I'm afraid you're going to have to learn Greasemonkey scripting.
Which has now disappeared.

Well, if a site owner wants to force ABP users to see ads, all we can do is update the rules when they update the site. We'll see, can you try an update now?
