Ad Domain Taken Down From EasyList due to DMCA Request

Post by gotitbro »

fanboy Recently pushed a commit to EasyList that removed an ad domain (belonging to Admiral) giving the reason "Removed due to DMCA takedown request".

I think we all know how wrong and false this is. Domain names don't come under DMCA and in no way should this takedown request have been taken seriously and followed upon before discussing with the community. EasyList is still very much a community project.

This is just one of the domains Admiral uses for its ad blocking and serving purposes. If they have sent a DMCA request for this domain then surely others will follow suit if we don't take action right now, i.e., reversing this commit ASAP.

We should not succumb to such false and fake takedown requests especially when we represent such a huge amount of voices.

I was surprised to see no discussion here on such a major and unusual change. Lets bring about a discussion in regards to this topic smed79 intense gorhill okiehsch -Mark- Lanik MonztA

PS: Please also publish the DMCA Takedown Request publicly fanboy.

Edit: The domain removed from EasyList is http://functionalclam.com and the filter removed being:

Code: Select all

||functionalclam.com^$third-party

They might have gotten the DMCA idea from here: http://blockadblock.com/adblocking/is-adblock-plus-violating-the-dmca/

Also, it should be noted that sending DMCA notices is not a big deal much like it is not for legal letters. The DMCA request should have first been published and discussed before taking the drastic measure of falling into their falsified demands.

the commit showed this filter was removed due to DMCA.

We had no option but to remove the filter without putting the Easylist repo in jeopardy. If it is a Circumvention/Adblock-Warning adhost, it should be removed from Easylist even without the need for a DMCA request.

In regards to Adblock-Warning/Anti-adblock, the amount of filters being added recently to Easylist has been greatly limited due to issues like this. As list authors we have to be careful in what we add.

We'll certainly look at our legal options and it will be contested if we get DMCA requests for any legit adservers or websites that use DMCA as a way to limit Easylist's ability to block ads.

Yes, saw this happening on Github. Completely bogus and invalid. Domain names CANNOT be copyrighted, yet github forwarded the DMCA to Easylist and in fear of getting their entire repo removed, they removed the rule.
