Update

Google passed along a statement. "We do not comment on rumor or speculation," a spokesperson told Ars. "We’ve been working closely with the Coalition for Better Ads and industry trades to explore a multitude of ways Google and other members of the Coalition could support the Better Ads Standards."

Orig article - https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-will-help-publishers-prepare-for-a-chrome-ad-blocker-coming-next-year-1496344237
In addition to the ad blocking tool, Google is also pitching publishers on a new tool it is calling “Funding Choices,” which is designed to combat the effects of ad blockers offered by other companies. If publishers enabled that feature on their sites, users with ad blockers turned on would be presented with messaging prompting them to disable their blockers to access the content, or to pay for a “pass” to remove advertising entirely.
Sounds like another anti adblock measure from Google

we won't be able to remove the anti adblock message anymore, as they will just detect the extension existence by it's unique ID, I am guessing that removing the message will be against Google TOS anyway so it's the end of the Adblockers for chrome?

A new WSJ piece on Google press release:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/ad-blockers-say-they-wont-be-replaced-by-google-chrome-ad-filter-1496829601

-Mark- Seems like “Funding Choices” or anti adb (as you put it nicely) from Google is live now:

Already there are issues arising due to this:

PS: Google has also published a list of sites pushing the initial test of this feature: https://support.google.com/contributor/answer/7324995

gotitbro Oh well, we all are aware how Google loves "monetizing" everything they can find. This will rather provoke more users to install/continue using adblocking tools at their disposal.

Read an excellent comment about Chrome's ad blocking feature on the WSJ article (first post in this thread):
As pointed out here, Adblock Plus allows paid (to them) ads to get through. That's what google is trying to eliminate... the extortion Adblock Plus has as their business model. They are going into competition with Adblock Plus. Google's will let any ad through without payment if it meets google-specified criteria that are essentially the same as those Adblock Plus requires to let them through for a charge. Since Chrome has such a large market share, any Chrome user will not benefit from using Adblock Plus, since they get the same thing already from Chrome. Therefore, google and its advertisers don't have to pay extortion funds to Adblock Plus, meaning more money for advertisers and google and less for Adblock Plus.

~Rick Amerson
Basically Google's plan to put ad blocking business model out of business...

Yes to bury EYEO's extortion scheme for good and save themselves and others entities like Google, millions of $$ just to have their ads whitelisted.
