list of bad ad sites will still be downloaded regardless of whether the ad blocker It's a component in chrome://components/ titled Subresource Filter Rules , so you cannot disable update check. Yep, that's how I always did it. Don't understand why are people making a big deal out of this. It was a convenience, not the be all/end all for viewing images.PS: You can still right click to open image in a new tab in your browsers.

If you want to try it out anyhow, just get the canary version. You can't turn it off technically, but you can allow ads or block them via a toggle at
chrome://settings/content/ads

If you're running uBlock Origin or Adblock Plus, then it won't work for you, as the extension will block the ads for you before Chrome gets the chance to do it.

if its more effective than an extension It's not, that's what this blogpost establishes successfully. Out of 55 ad types, it only blocks 9. They said the attackers behind the ads were abusing Google's DoubleClick ad platform to display them to YouTube visitors in select countries, including Japan, France, Taiwan, Italy, and Spain.
