Bin-layer annoyances [added]

Rick, have a look at this bug report: https://www.mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=17923

Can you add the filter |http://bin-layer.de/* to your list?

False positive - "Verified by Visa" [fixed]

Please see bug 17193. I think, in this context the filter "&partner$subdocument" is pretty risky.

Ads - pro-advertising.com [added]

From: http://forum.gamesnet.it/showthread.php?t=424160

Pretty annoying context ads, I added "|http://keyword.pro-advertising.com/*" to my list. Shouldn't be wrong in EasyList either.

I just read a discussion about this site: http://www.towleroad.com/
A truly amazing collection of different ad scripts, trackers and useless widgets.

Wall Street Journal [added] (pvt)

http://online.wsj.com/public/us has an ad at the top - http://online.wsj.com/img/promos/mark p ... update.gif. Maybe add */promos/* filter or do you think this will create false positives?

PS: Yes, this ad cannot be blocked via context menu - bug 16605.

Blocking Web Clips in Gmail [fixed]

I noticed this thread: http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-Problem-solving/browse_thread/thread/a421bce816876ffc The web clips are the news headlines that Gmail shows above your Inbox. They can be easily disabled in the settings (switch to the Web Clips tab and uncheck "Show my web clips above...

I have never seen their ads but I don't see how it should make a difference - ads are ads. As long as they are using the usual ad technology, they introduce hidden costs to the users regardless of whether this user does or doesn't want to donate (or maybe has already donated). If they care about it,...

I guess they simply realized that they cannot produce good software so they need dirty tricks to beat Google. I hated their new web interfaces for mail and photos after five minutes of using, it is hard to believe that there are people who know the Google counterparts and are still using these bad c...

I already thought so. So Yahoo isn't doing anything unusual there (this time), we only have a confused user who expects that banners will always be the same. Btw, did you read http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2007/01/yahoo-switching-ie7-settings-without-permission.html - I guess I will tell everybody...

Yahoo doesn't really have a "script that checks if the ad is displayed and displays another one, if it hasn't", right? Only the usual banner rotator - or have there been any radical changes on Yahoo lately?

The thing that worries me most is the startup delay right now. Other than that we are fine - 5000 filters are absolutely no problem. I think I have a solution to the startup issue but this will take some time to be implemented. Meanwhile we can already start I think (we won't get thousands of filter...

My plan for the big filter database (which, I hope, we are still going to make :) ) was to have several categories - like ads, stat scripts and element hiding - and let the user choose which ones he actually wants to subscribe to.

I think that blocking anything other than ads should be an opt-in thing. In the end webmasters (and not only them) need their statistics and not everybody is so much concerned about it.

As I said - the dev builds didn't have any optimization (with the exception of the last one, a few hours before the release).

@Rick: Thanks for doing this, I already see 63ms instead of 98ms in my test - that's quite an improvement. I should have looked at it earlier, would have been much easier for you to fix.

If the text ads are inserted by a script (and they usually are) - no, Lynx doesn't know JavaScript. But if they are really there in the HTML code (the kind of things we like to use element hiding on), then it will show them of course.

The HTML code for the dropdowns actually is in the web page itself, so there is nothing there that can be blocked. With Adblock Plus 0.7 (latest development build) you could hide them however, the rule is:
