Re: Reddit is stress-testing Adblock Plus server

Oh, I don't say it doesn't help - the attention coming from fligtar's blog post is certainly worth a lot more than reddit users who will be gone the minute the link disappears from the front page. But fligtar won't help me stress-test the server.

Despite my utmost respect for Foxiewire, it doesn't generate 5000 clicks per hour ;)

Reddit is stress-testing Adblock Plus server

My two years old blog post made the front page on reddit: http://adblockplus.org/blog/anatomy-of-ads Right now it is number 7 on reddit and apparently stayed somewhere around that position for the last 14 hours. The blog post had 24 comments in 10 hours (when I checked my mail this morning I thought...

Re: EasyList history?

EasyList is being sync'ed with the CVS on mozdev.org, so there is a history available there: http://www.mozdev.org/source/browse/adb ... ick752.txt. That's the last three months only however, MozDev is being used as download location since end of October.

You mean the sponsored links showing up in Google search? You will need to disable these two filters:

Code: Select all

google.com,google.com.au,google.co.uk,google.ca,google.se#table(id=mbEnd)(width=30%)

Yes, http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/easylist/adblock_rick752.txt.gz is what you will usually get when requesting http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/easylist/adblock_rick752.txt - unless a proxy or a firewall software prevents you from receiving gzip'ed data. That means that while EasyList is currently at ...

Interestingly, the week is still not over - the server is online despite the message on the first page. "Hacked by Marlanu" page is also still available - and even the forum, though now it is used exclusively by spammers. Oh, and the access statistics don't show any real change, still the ...

I entirely forgot that we also wanted a version of EasyList that is free of element hiding - this one is now available if somebody wants it: [url=abp://subscribe/?location=http%3A%2F%2Feasylist.adblockplus.org%2Fadblock_rick752_noelemhide.txt&title=EasyList%20without%20element%20hiding]Subscribe...

Re: letemps.ch

I said "intentionally" meaning that they really wanted their content to be in a <div> with that class name - but they didn't intend to trigger false positives in EasyList. Whitelisting them probably wouldn't be a good idea. Seeing that you have "#div(id^=advertisement)" and "...

Rick, they are not doing this to annoy you. If you check http://letemps.ch/Resource/SysConfig/We ... screen.css - they are styling the page differently depending on these classes. Please reconsider.

http://www.letemps.ch/ - the entire site is being hidden by the filter "#div(class*=advertisement)". That's because the content is wrapped in this DIV (intentionally this time):

There has been an interesting development after EasyList and EasyElement have been merged - EasyList got a pretty solid increase, all users who have been using EasyList+EasyElement combined subscription before. As a result, last Monday EasyList for the first time exceeded 1 million downloads on a si...

I see a false positive on http://www.nickjr.com/playtime/cats/games/index.jhtml - the filter "nickjr.com##table[width="757"] tr:first-child" hides the entire content.

Another one: https://www.mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=20442. Looks like unintentionally wrapping entire site content in a block meant for ads isn't quite uncommon.

Now that EasyElement is part of EasyList, it seems that you also need to disable these two filters:

Code: Select all

tomopen, even without EasyElement you won't always have empty space instead of an ad - only if the webmaster explicitly reserved some space for the ads. My impression is however that most often this isn't the case.

rick752 wrote:The downside is that most element hides are "site specific" English-speaking domains ... which does little for, say, a strictly German-language user.
German users get to English-language sites occasionally, and even if not - no harm is done by rules that aren't being used.

I got a mail from a Gygia employee: I noticed that Gigya is being listed as an ad in your adblock add-on. I think this was done by mistake. To lessen the confusion was exactly my idea. Right now you can have four different combinations with Rick's subscrip...
