New ads appear now under a lot of videos, big ads (with "ad" in yellow) like ad in YT homepage on mobile site. Ads with doubleclick. Tested on Opera Android (Operads) , Chrome Android (with ABP extension), Firefox Android with UBO enabled.

Hello I would like to know how to add a whitelist for youtube while still blocking ads on the site. Specifically I would like to be able to add videos to favorites, and I can't do that without disabling ublock.

What filter lists are enabled in uBo?
How to reproduce the issue?

EasyList currently fails to block these YouTube sidebar ads:

To do so, add this cosmetic filter:

Code: Select all

youtube.com##ytd-promoted-sparkles-web-renderer

@STR8_AN94BALLER

Can you try disabling your other extensions (if you have any) and test again?

@STR8_AN94BALLER I hope you still have the default lists enabled in uBo (if not just reset to default settings in uBo dashboard)

Like @STR8_AN94BALLER, I now see ads (two big ads) in YT mobile above each search results. I get rid of GoogleTads. Tested on all browsers all updated, same with Firefox Mobile.

Youtube seems to have inplemented a feature requiring you to click to continue playing videos when you've been watching lots of videos in a playlist. Is there anyway to prevent Youtube from pausing play and requiring you to click to continue watching? I listen to a lot of music in the background and it's irritating to have to click. I would say it takes between 30 minutes and an hour before the message pops up.

Here is test, Testing with uBO disabled vs enabled. and highlighting the filter doing the work.

Desktop UA: https://secure.fanboy.co.nz/gif/youtube2.gif

Mobile UA: https://secure.fanboy.co.nz/gif/youtube3.gif

Code: Select all

youtube.com##ytm-promoted-sparkles-text-search-renderer

Code: Select all

youtube.com##.promoted-sparkles-text-search-root-container
tldr; Both text ads were blocked (see gif examples)

For mobile, only Adblock Browser or Firefox with UBO installed work fine, but it's needed to close and reload tabs to force adblock working to block Youtube ads because in certain time, ads bypass adblocks. I tested all browsers on Android and confirm that. Opera native adblock is fake I think, doesn't block ads, Chrome bypass adblock addons. YouTube ads (in browser and in YouTube app) bypass also adblock like Adguard, same on rooted Android. I confirm Firefox regullary crash after certain time of watching Youtube.

I understand limitations so I explain possible ways to watch youtube without annoyances and dead ends to avoid (to save times) and I'm worried that one day it will be impossible to block ads with the mobile list method or elsewhere. Hope this will never happen.

I take my advice from my experience and after several weeks of mobile testing:

If you happen to see ads, on YouTube in particular, on Firefox mobile despite UBO (or ABP) installed, you should know that you have to update the ABP or UBO lists, manually because Firefox mobile does not leave extensions update itself.

Another thing to know, I also noticed that Firefox mobile disables extensions when opening the browser (even after a restart after crash, which happens very often especially when watching YouTube) and even after a period of inactivity.

The only solution is to close the tab and then open another tab so that the extensions whose ad blockers are activated again on the tab. Hopefully Firefox will fix this quickly, as it is effective apart from intermittent crashes.

I'm reporting another variant of YouTube's fingerprinting: I've been seeing in the uBlock Origin logger XmlHttpRequests from URLs like this:

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/youtubei/v1/log_event?alt=json&key=Axxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
(The X's can be underscores, letters in any case, or numbers.)

This kind of requests can be sent from YouTube itself, as seen in

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r47juQooUc
or in embedded videos in other pages, as seen at

Code: Select all

https://www.euronews.com/2019/12/19/major-disruption-as-french-strikes-over-pension-reform-enter-third-week
It typically fires itself when moving your mouse in front of the video itself, or when you wait for several seconds while the video's running.

Filter

Code: Select all

||youtube.com/youtubei/v1/log_event*$xmlhttprequest
appears to block them without breaking any functionality.

EDIT: Forgot to specify my configurarion. I'm using uBlock Origin 1.24.2 on Firefox 68.3.0esr on Debian Buster, configured 7 uBlock's filter lists, plus EasyList + EasyPrivacy + AdGuard Tracking protection + Fanboy's Enhanced Tracking List + AdGuard Spanish/Portuguese + EasyList Spanish.

Blocking those log requests caused issues at the end of the video (like video suggestions) so it affected functionality of YT.

Could you clarify? I watched videos before and after logging into a test account (both embedded and in Youtube.com), and couldn't find anything odd at the end of the video.

I normally use YouTube with uBlock and without logging to any account, so I might've easily missed something.

I've been blocking that quite a while and haven't noticed any problem, but like @CheshireNeko I don't login to YT.

Videos that have video suggestions embedded into it, after playback has finised (embedded YT and possibly first party) the "log" requests causes issues.

Given the history I'm happy to leave it for the moment
