supercheats.com

Post by twilliams »

Hello EasyList, this post is nearly the same as a prior post that my co-worker had resolved about a year ago (viewtopic.php?f=64&t=26949).

After checking the easylist.txt we are noticing again that there have been listings for cdn.playwire.com , which in turn causes our player not to run on those specified sites. Specifically, you can turn adblock on and goto:

Code: Select all

https://www.supercheats.com/resident-evil-7/walkthrough/
Just requesting to remove cdn.playwire.com from the list, as it is not an ad itself, it hosts our video player.

Thanks in advance,

Tommy Williams

Hello again Easylist. We had a this same issue come up in the past.

The video player used on cdn.playwire.com is being prevented from loading on any site we try to use. We use this video player to show updated content videos, and given that the easy list blocks all ad servers (such as google, spotx, appnexus, etc) any ads that attempt to play from the video player are already blocked, but we still want our users to be able to view the content on the video player.

Instead, ad block is currently blocking the entire video player from playing, causing an errors on our page.

One other example of adblock being bad for the playerwire video player is

Code: Select all

http://abcya.com/games/make_an_easter_egg
They have ads on their page, and making use of the video player to just play ads from the networks the choose, not from playwire.com. Without adblocker you can see the ad may or may not play and the game is accessible. With adblock, since the player's embed.js and its assets fail to load, the game fails to load afterwards. The player, when not on easylist, will detect adblock and remove itself from the page, allowing the user to play the game. This is what we are looking for!

Thanks for the assistance

Have received an email from playwire, but as of right now its still considered "invideo advertising"

Looking specifically at

Code: Select all

https://www.supercheats.com/resident-evil-7/walkthrough/
that is just a revolving video ads, not directly related to the actual web page content. Maybe easier to just to hide the embedded element

The player is capable of allowing ads to be played, but it isn't revolving video ads. After the initial pre-roll ad you can see that skin of the player changes and it shows the content video. The videos are part of playlist pertaining to the site's context as you can see https://ibb.co/s3svL2N.

The video player itself is not an 'ad player', but it is capable of pulling in the SpotX or Google IMA ad players, which are blocked by AdBlock (both are on the easy list). Hence, when our player (cdn.playwire.com) isn't on the easylist, the non-monetized video content is still able to play, while the ads are blocked as they should be.

Here is a great example of how the player should play when ad block is turned on:

Code: Select all

https://www.supercheats.com/resident-evil-7/walkthrough/#zeusdebug;noads
This is how it was up until October 2020. I really hope we can get it back to that, as our users come to the site for the media content, and we don't want to force them to turn their ad blocker off.

If it's considered a invideo advert player. We only started to make it specific initially. Given what I'm seeing (below), I see no harm in changing the block too ||playwire.com^$third-party

Here is what I'm seeing, https://gif.fanboy.co.nz/gif/supercheats-advert.gif

It is literally, one advert after another, after another, after another. After the 5th Advert in a row, I stopped the recording.

Those are our content videos, not advertisements. They have a play/pause button, no click through. And unmuting, you will hear the audio for the video, giving the video itself a bit more context. You can see network requests being made to our video content on our CDNs via .m3u8 files here, where it sets defines the files to stream: https://ibb.co/MMGF0vB

If an ad is playing (remove the `#zeusdebug;noads` from that URL), you'll see a different skin, with "Ad" text overlaying the bottom left of the video, and one simple mute toggle. The ad will also have a clickthru URL associated with it. And again, if an ad were to try to play before October with ad block on, ad block would simply block the 'spotx', 'google', or whatever ad player, and continue to our content.

@fanboy Any update on this? Mind looking at the page one more time to see that we aren't looping ads, but it is our hosted video content streaming from our video player
