Font Awesome icon blocked

Post by tagliala »

Hi,

as suggested here: https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awe ... t-49739568
I'm going to ask an explanation about the following rules

Code: Select all

##.fa-facebook
##.fa-facebook-square
##.fa-google-plus
##.fa-google-plus-square
##.fa-instagram
##.fa-linkedin
##.fa-linkedin-square
##.fa-pinterest
##.fa-share-square-o
##.fa-twitter
##.fa-twitter-square
##.fa-youtube
##.fa-youtube-square
Why this filter block font-awesome icons?

Sometimes, those icons are used in the footer of a website for linking purposes: http://jsfiddle.net/tagliala/UKKnJ/

IMHO there is no "social" hazard here, especially in the youtube icon. You may dislike social networks, but you could be interested in a youtube channel / twitter profile of the company you are visiting.

Moreover, the workaround is as easy and is documented here: http://fontawesome.io/icons/#brand

Thanks in advance

Its blocked because its used for social elements, I don't mind whitelisting it for http://fontawesome.io/ or http://jsfiddle.net/ but if used, out side of those sites it'll still be shown.

That's the purpose of the list: remove social media buttons/elements. Since it should do what the user expects, it doesn't matter if it's just a tiny icon or a third-party element like the FB like button (imo).

If social elements are to be blocked, then please block the links/buttons instead of blocking the icons. The social media icons are not always used for links.

If we did it this way the list could be 5-6x larger (since everything will be site-specific). And often the only option that we can block or hide is the social fontawesome element.

Either disable the social list on your selected site(s), or just disable/remove the social filter.

Note; fontawsome.io and jsfiddle.net should work well with the Social list now.

in my opinion the tracking buttons should be blocked, but only those since there's probably a lot of people who choose the option for THIS reason, but blocking literally all references to FB in iconic context is a bit of an overdrive in my opinion, since the main purpose of this list was to prevent the "evil tracking buttons" and not all fb icons or similar.

I agree with the previous poster. The icon removal would not be the end of the world, but it also removes the links to my github page, my linkedin account and my email. Just because I'm using FontAwesome?? That doesn't make sense to me.

The description on easylist should be changed because Fanboy's Social Blocking List does not just "solely removes Social Media content on web pages such as the Facebook like button and other widgets."

I agree that this needs to be fixed. I'm updating my web site using a new theme which happens to use the FontAwesome icons. I have added a link at the top that one of my visitors can click on to get to my twitter page. There is no tracking. But it's blocked if I have ABP turned on with Fanboy's Social Blocking List enabled. Oddly, it works fine on Firefox, just not on Safari (Mac)
