thepiratebay.cr / kickass.cd

Post by runswithascript »

I know that in the past, at least on Firefox, there was a time when Adblock Plus with EasyList would not only block ads on the Pirate Bay and Kickass Torrents websites themselves, but it would also prevent the popup ads tabs from happening. This is no longer the case.

To reproduce go to http://www.thepiratebay.cr and click on Top 100, or http://www.kickass.cd and click on movies.

Recently I switched to Chrome, and I was hoping Adblock Plus would somehow manage this, but it is the same. I can see there is an option in Adblock Plus to right click and block an element, but not an entire website.

These are BIG BAD ADS that appear, entire websites, and I am surprised they are not blocked automatically already by Adblock Plus - please tell me, is there something I can do to make it so they are?

I cannot reproduce your issue. Did you scan your system for malware ?

I have not no, I am on Ubuntu 17.04, clean install yesterday, clean chrome install also. On a different Windows system I imported bookmarks and logins from Firefox to Chrome, and then I logged into Chrome on Ubuntu on my laptop and synced my profile from the cloud.

Please let me know what tests or debugging to perform.

for thepiratebay try:

Code: Select all

/watch?key=$popup
However, are you talking about popups which are quickly closed ?

Alternatively you could try uBo adblocker.

I added that custom filter and from the quick tests I have done on TPB AND KAT, it seems to have prevented the popup tabs from occurring, thanks!

No, the popups would load in a new tab, the new tab would take focus, and the tab would stay open until I manually close it - now my screen flickers for a split second when the popups are blocked, but I do not see them :-)

I am curious as to why my setup needed this custom filter though, and for you, and possible the vast majority of other users, EasyList alone was enough?

I will keep uBo adblocker in mind for the future.

I don't know ... probably due to my testing using a vpn / tunneling account.

However, uBo is better equipped to deal with torrent / porn sites (using lots of popups, other circumventing methods).
