An alternative is to use the user script AdsBypasser https://greasyfork.org/fr/scripts/4881-adsbypasser

I have a big issue with EasyList. If I have it enabled and I disable ABP on Forbes and Everywhere, the Forbes website doesn't load at all (no Block-AdBlock banner, just a white page and Firefox spinning wheel).

If I disable EasyList everything is fine.

Any idea of what could cause this problem?

Problem solved.

I've tested the same thing on Chrome and everything was fine so I tried to completely remove and reinstall ABP. Now everything is ok, Forbes webpages load and I don't have any ad.

it won't let you read the article unless you click a button to agree to whitelist Forbes.com.

Thanks. I'm still just figuring out the purpose of this board. I initially thought it was just to report ads for future updates to the filter lists, but now realizing it's at least as much a DIY resource since the authors are overwhelmed.

That said I'd like to thank the authors for putting in their free time for this. I'm curious, though: development of ABP is funded by the Respectable Ads Program and donations, but Easy List isn't? Isn't most of what makes ABP work the lists?

I just tried it and it works for me, but I had to make sure to enter them as two separate filters, each one beginning with "@@."

I decided to disable adp. For some reason it was no longer working. I have a whole string of custom filters and unsure if something broke it. Anyways I enabled regular adblock and entered the filters above. That works.

Maybe the problem was something I was doing with ADP.

This is the list I have on ADP: http://pastebin.com/raw/Ru6SFTzL

Some ads are blocked, but oddly some of the filters are ineffective. The ones related to Forbes were ineffective on this list, but were effective for regular adblock.

You have to add the filters correctly: any filter on its own line

wrong filters:

Code: Select all

||revcontent.com^$domain=forbes.com@@||forbes.com^$generichide@@||forbes.com^$genericblock||moatads.com^$domain=forbes.com||sharethrough.com^$domain=forbes.com||amazon-adsystem.com^$domain=forbes.com||tpc.googlesyndication.com^$domain=forbes.com||googleads.g.doubleclick.net^$domain=forbes.com||s0.2mdn.net^$domain=forbes.comforbes.com##[id^="google_ads_iframe"]forbes.com##[id^="top-ad"]||securepubads.g.doubleclick.net^$domain=forbes.com@@||securepubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/ads?gdfp_req=1&correlator=$domain=forbes.com
You should delete all those filters and add correctly only those still necessary ..

forbes.com forces you to disable adblock for the website before entering. Hitting "continue to site >" will just lead to the same page. If I have it "Disable on this page only" in ADP, I can get around it, and it adds "@@|https://www.forbes.com/forbes/welcome/?$document" to the exception rules.

As you .. should know ABP and the official lists accepted by ABP wont fix anti adblocking issues. So, your call if you want to keep abp or switch to uBo

Hi,

I speculate that something inside EasyList, or something else I don’t understand yet, is allowing forbes.com to detect that the adblocker is in use, and completely block reading the page (no way to X out of it):

Image

I have constructed a partially-working filter to bypass that detection, and block the ads:

Code: Select all

[Adblock Plus 2.0]
! Version: 12
! Title: forbes.com anti-adblock filter list
! Expires: 4 days (update frequency)
! Homepage: <censored_for_now>
!
!
! Disable EasyList filters on forbes.com
! Have to do this so that I can attack the page directly. EasyList apparently is what
! is detectable by forbes.com and thus results in the extremely obnoxious adblock-blocker
! blocker pop-up (or pop-in?):
@@||forbes.com^$generichide
@@||forbes.com^$genericblock
forbes.com##div[class="vestpocket"]
!
! Get rid of the extreme time-wasting ad interrupting the flow of reading
! right in the middle of the content:
forbes.com##div[class="recirc-unit recirc-unit-open"]
!
! Get rid of the ad at the top of the page
! This is still buggy: It only works _after_ the page loads, as it does still
! initially display it for a few seconds, pushing the valuable content down a bit, and then finally
! is hidden at the end, and then moves the content back up the page. Still annoying as that down and back up
! movement causes you to loose your visual place while reading the real content during that initial page load.
forbes.com##div[class="top-ad-container"]
!
! Get rid of the ads on the right
! Which is is also a attention-grabbing time-waster:
forbes.com##div[class=right-rail]
Now, the above filter mostly works, and I’m pretty happy with it, but it currently has one flaw: Upon first load, the ad at the top of the page does succeed in being displayed for a few seconds while the page loads, but then it is finally removed (presumably by my filter expressions). This really isn’t a big deal, because I can simply wait for the page to load, but it shoves the real content I want to read down and then back up again when the div is hidden, and is distracting enough to warrant fixing it if that is possible.

Looking at the page source, without the filter being applied, I see the div corresponding to the ad at the top of the page that I wish to never be displayed, and it responds to hiding via this:

Code: Select all

forbes.com##div[class="top-ad-container"]
Is there a way to prevent even that initial first display of that ad at the top, especially without moving the content down and then back up in the browser’s view? What is that ad at the top? A pop-up? A pop-in? Neither?

In case it matters: I’m running AdBlockPlus Version 3.8.4 inside Google Chrome Version 81.0.4044.122 (Official Build) (64-bit).
