Tidying Up [added]

Post by Hubird »

I spent a bit of time on the net today and came across a few sites that could do with some tidying up. The list might look long but 3 or 4 on the sites use the same id's for the ads.

http://www.engadget.com/

Sponsored links on the side can be removed with:

On the site http://www.gpsreview.net/tomtom-720/ the top ad has been blocked but some wasted space could do with being removed.

Code: Select all

gpsreview.net#TR(id=lead)
I'm still seeing some sponsored links with http://www.google.com.au (I mentioned this on the ABP forum http://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1854 but though I may as well report it while I'm here)

Code: Select all

google.com.au#DIV(id=tpa1)
google.com.au#DIV(id=tads)
Seem to take care of it

@fanboy:
I am surprised to see you making filter suggestions here, I would have thought you would be busy enough with your own list !! When people make suggestions here do you usually add them to your own list ?

@rick
I noticed you already have lifehacker.com#div(id=innerFloaterAd) in the easyelement subscription, would just #div(id=innerFloaterAd) be too general because it would work on the Australian and US editions of Lifehacker & also on http://www.gizmodo.com.au

I'm working on the assumption that my suggested change would not be too general so

if oreillynet.com#div(id=skyscraper) could be changed into #DIV(id=skyscraper) it would take care of

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2007/06/tomto ... prove.html

http://www.lifehacker.com.au/

http://www.defamer.com.au/

and

http://www.oreillynet.com

After browsing http://oreillynet.com/ I didn't get any hits on oreillynet.com#div(id=leaderboard) or oreillynet.com#div(id=skyscraper). It would not surprise me if they are no longer needed.

#*(class=sponsored) seems like it would be a useful addition. It Would work on at least 3 sites:

2 fanboy mentioned:

http://www.tvsquad.com/
http://www.joystiq.com/

and also

http://www.engadget.com/

I did not get any hits on the foxsports.com#div(id=ad300x250box) filter after browsing http://msn.foxsports.com/ it too may no longer be needed.

I also have 2 new filter suggestions

foxsports.com#IFRAME(id=dapIfM2) removes some empty space where an ad was on http://msn.foxsports.com/
foxsports.com.au#DD removes some empty space with the word "Advertisement" in it on http://www.foxsports.com.au/

Never to busy to help out others, I don't mind making suggestions or ideas.. I'll look at people submissions on missing ads and false positives in the forums (G's, adblock, and here), see if they apply to me, and make changes accordingly. But most of my submissions are via email, friends and general web browsing. But any filters used I got directly from an author I'll give credit as always.

I do the same thing because you can't keep up with EVERYTHING on the web yourself :) Using other forums to check problems that other users have is a great way to keep up with changes on the web. Sometimes problems are not brought to your attention directly.

I believe that sharing info between us is the best way to keep problems down .... and keeps users from blaming ABP for problems too when it is actually one of the subscriptions that is the problem. We have ALL had that happen before.

@ Hubird:

I'll look through these when I get some extra time (busy this weekend).

Some of the 'generic' suggestions have false-positives ... that why they don't exist. "Skyscraper" is one that I have though about for a long time, but I just feel that it has "false-positives" written all over it.

Just went through most of this. I've been busy the last week or so. I'm trying to catch up now.

I think I've gotten most of this now

I'll go back through it when I catch up on some other things.
